Middle School Scale Requirements

Wind players must correctly play a minimum of five scales and their related arpeggios to
qualify for All State Band. All scales must be memorized. Any student found using scale sheets
during auditions will be disqualified.

Students will have 4 minutes from the first note of the C scale to complete the scale requirements: 12 major scales, C Harmonic Minor, A melodic minor, chromatic scale

12 Major Scales and Arpeggios:
The scale order is: C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, B, E, A, D, G – 1 point for each scale, plus 1 point
for each related arpeggio.

These scales are to be played in eighth notes at a suggested tempo of
MM quarter note =120.

Please use the scale sheet provided by ABA to ensure you’re playing
the correct octave / octaves.

Minor Scales and Arpeggios:
C Harmonic Minor A Melodic Minor
1 point for each scale, plus 1 point for each related arpeggio. These scales are to be played in
eighth notes at a suggested tempo of MM quarter note = 120. Please use the scale sheet
provided by ABA to ensure you’re playing the correct octave / octaves.

Chromatic Scale
The chromatic scale is specific to each instrument.

played in eighth notes at a suggested tempo of MM quarter note=120.
